Reaper
I wrote this song at the end of my worst road. It’s not about wanting to die, it’s about finally loving life enough to ask death to wait. Wait until I’ve written the songs. Wait until I’ve chased the beauty. Wait until my words are known.
With fiddle, stomping drums, and harmonies that feel like they’re coming from somewhere deep in the woods, “Reaper” is the y’allternative queer folk sound I love so much. Mostly because it feels like, well, me. A little haunted, a little hopeful, and very much for the resilient ones who had to survive someone else’s idea of heaven.

I recall when my voice didn’t make a sound,
when I was drowning in the danger of drowning.
I called out for the answer,
but what I heard wasn’t a word,
just the echo of my heartbeat.
What tasted sweet to my ears—
like lemongrass and raspberries
and childish fears that disappear with time—
replaced the madness in my sadness
with seasons of slanting rhymes.
And in the swing of subtleties,
the highs, the lows, the in-betweens,
was music scrawled in pages of my book.
The sorry songs that many recall
but few will ever learn.
