I recall when my voice didn’t make a sound,
when I was drowning in the danger of drowning.
I called out for the answer,
but what I heard wasn’t a word,
just the echo of my heartbeat.
What tasted sweet to my ears—
like lemongrass and raspberries
and childish fears that disappear with time—
replaced the madness in my sadness
with seasons of slanting rhymes.
And in the swing of subtleties,
the highs, the lows, the in-betweens,
was music scrawled in pages of my book.
The sorry songs that many recall
but few will ever learn.
